Following the Christchurch Earthquakes, the Kaikanui and Courtney detention basins forming the primary treatment for Kaiapoi were severely damaged due to liquefaction and lateral spreading.
This resulted in an invited tendered works package. Hunter Civil were awarded the contract to complete the works and completed all works with in-house resources.
The scope included, reshaping, completion of cut to fill operations of 1700m3 of existing fill, complete with reforming the 17,000m2 basins. This also involved the removal of 4 spans of the historic rail bridge, new walkways and new piped drainage works including reinforced concrete structure remediation. Finally the sites were reinstated with landscape planting and re-sowing of grassed areas.
The works were completed successfully without incident just prior to the winter period.
